04 Mar 2024Wonderful - Too Pricey In Only Small Bag
Once upon a time, I decided I would give my first puppy Royal Canin. I believe this was before they had the Shih Tzu Puppy formula, but did have the Shih Tzu Adult at the time (in both the larger size, and the exorbitantly priced smaller bag). This was around 15 years ago, when the Royal Canin price wasn't jacked up due to inflation, like everything else. It was still cream of the crop in my mind, but I splurged for it, justifying the price by grabbing the larger adult shih tzu bag on amazon. The compromise here was I was feeding a 10 lbs shih tzu and she would have to deal with less fresh food. Royal Canin food is CRACK to dogs, especially when fresh. As long as a puppy isn't fearful, I've been able to use Royal Canin food as training treats at mealtimes because it is fragrant and obviously yummy (to the dogs). My dog's coat was soft and healthy. Her eyes remained healthy. Later her joint health slipped, but that's because I couldn't figure out a way to get her to take hip supplements and by that time, I had switched her over to Blue Buffalo (not their premium meaty tier, but their middle of the road, better than most dog food tier). She wasn't as excited about Blue Buffalo, but she also found her poops less enticing to eat, and I didn't feel like I could continue justifying the cost of Royal Canin far into her adulthood. I wish I could afford Farmer's Dog honestly (that stuff kept my parents' senior dog for years after getting a 6 month prognosis). So time has passed. Royal Canin has gone up in price, but worse, there are no bulk options. I'm not even a breeder. If I were a shih tzu breeder I'd be extremely saddened by the lack of option to get the breed specific puppy chow in a larger size.

10 Sep 2023Dog loves it, but has downfalls
My puppy loves this food. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because it only comes in a little 2.5 lb bag. The price is outrageous for the amount that you get. The bag doesn't even last a month. I will continue to give it to him until he is a year old, then will have to switch it to something else. Also Ican get it on Amazon faster than the website.
